Part II (firm) Ballads of Murderer's Bar ..., compiled by Miss Kelley, chiefly from songs of John A. Stone, with music recorded by Mildred Maxam Wiley. With these is a copy of signed recollections (1932) of John P. Selleck, ballad singer in the mining towns.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901).
